Program Description

For the 2024 Yellowstone study away trip, Dr. Tom Bowman and Dr. Jeffrey Herrick welcome students of all physical abilities and backgrounds. An essential part of the trip is hiking up to seven miles at elevations approaching 9,000 feet. Students should feel comfortable hiking this distance prior to leaving for the trip and confident in their physical fitness. There are no alternative activities for trip hikes and participation is fundamental to course objectives and assignments. Reasonable accommodations will be provided upon request for students with medical, physical, and/or cognitive disabilities. Other activities include tent-camping, fly-fishing, and mountain biking. No prior experience is required for these sports and alternative activities can be developed to accommodate student disabilities and needs. For river-rafting, however, swimming ability is essential for participation. The Center for Accessibility and Disability services will approve and provide accommodations for students. For information about requesting accommodations, please visit https://www.lynchburg.edu/academics/disability-services/ or contact Julia Timmons at timmons.j@lynchburg.edu, phone 434-544-8687.
