Program Description

Stand where history was made and continues to be made during this study abroad program to Greece.

ENGL 201 - Ancient Greek Literature
We’ll begin with an introduction to the major gods, goddesses, and heroes of Greek mythology and will return to them throughout the course, adding to our knowledge of what they did and what they stood for. At all times we will deal with the significance of a given myth and with the “meaningfulness” of myth generally.

We will read passages from both of Homer’s epics—The Iliad and The Odyssey—enough to giveus the flavor of those masterpieces and to suggest why they are classics. Prominent in our discussions will be the role of the gods and the character of the epic heroes. We will also read The Agamemnon and a hefty number of myths that offer us some of the most recognizable and influential tales in Western literature.

PHIL 200W (pending approval)
Fulfill a writing enriched and philosophy general education requirement in this course where you will examine traditional philosophical problems with selected readings from major works in the history of Western philosophy.
