Program Description

The two courses taught in this summer study abroad program in Cuenca, Ecuador are SPAN 101 and SPAN 102.
Research consistently shows that cultural and linguistic immersion is the most effective way to learn a new language. This program is particularly well suited to immerse students in Ecuadorian culture and Spanish because of intense interaction with different groups of Ecuadorian people throughout the program. Students live with local families for their homestay, and collaborate with Ecuadorian university students, faculty, instructors, and residents of Cuenca. Lectures and excursions in the Cuenca region also provide students with unique cultural experiences and opportunities to acquire knowledge in a rich environment. Students will also be improving their Spanish through daily interactions with native speakers, instructors, and in the classroom, where grammar and vocabulary will be reinforced with activities that reflect the environment they will be in.
