What do the profession of physical therapy (PT) and Michelangelo’s Pieta have in common? The study of human anatomy through cadaveric dissection, of course! This course, entitled “The Art of Anatomical Dissection: From Ancient Rome To The Renaissance,” is the first of its kind among professional graduate-level programs in the field of PT. This course will be a true study abroad experience, beginning with a semester-long module exploring the rich history of anatomical study via cadaveric dissection in the Italian peninsula. Students will also explore how Italian art was influenced by the rise of anatomical knowledge during the ancient, medieval, and Renaissance periods. The course will culminate with a 14-day study abroad experience throughout the country of Italy, including travels to Naples, Pompeii, Rome, Florence, Bologna, Padua, and Venice. Students will visit anatomy museums and historic dissection theaters, and importantly, visit traditional cultural venues where they can view the very art that was inspired by anatomical study. Throughout the course, students will assess the anatomical accuracy of the masterpieces, marvel at the beauty of the human body, and reflect on the historic and cultural significance of the anatomy they will apply in the clinic. This experience will reiterate to PT students that all things are connected, whether it is a foot and knee or the sciences and humanities. An objective of the course is to generate well-rounded, humanistic students with an appreciation for history, art, and the anatomical influences that make that art so amazing -- thus connecting the world of physical therapy and art.
