Program Description

Learn more about the world and your place in it by experiencing Chile this J-term. Chile boasts one of the fastest developing economies in South America. Bordered to the east by the Andes Mountains and to the west by the Pacific Ocean, Chile is home to breathtaking and contrasting landscapes, rich in history and a wealth of discoveries that await you. Enjoy urban centers, modern resort cities, local arts, amazing food, beautiful beaches and recreation facilities.

This unique program will facilitate greater immersion and exchange with the dynamic people of Chile. Students will engage as teachers of English language and will share their North American culture with local students in the Valparaiso region. Excursions to other cities, such as Santiago, one of Latin America’s most modern and dynamic cities, will provide balanced perspectives about business and the cultures of Chile. With homestays and cultural excursions, you won’t just learn about Chile’s history, you will understand the culture by immersing yourself in it.

EDU 377 - Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)
Put theory into practice and develop global awareness by Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in cooperation with your faculty leader and a teacher in Chile. This course will give students a basic knowledge of educational policy and practices concerning the teaching of students with Limited English Proficiency (LEP), and students will gain an understanding of fundamental characteristics of language acquisition. By working closely with the cooperating teachers, students will prepare and implement lessons in English designed for non-English speakers. This course will also explore the challenges one experiences when entering into a new culture and unable to speak the local language with proficiency. Students will develop a deep understanding about the historical influences on the local people and will be better prepared to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

SPAN 377 - Chilean Culture (no Spanish language pre-requisite; course taught in English)
This course engages students in gaining a deeper understanding of the culture, politics, social, and economic aspects of Chile. The course facilitates multiple perspectives by comparing and contrasting observations students make with their own perspectives and cultural lenses. Students will develop a deep understanding about the historical influences on the local people and will be better prepared to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
